The suffering of women in the world today continues unabated. Women and their children are targeted, tortured and raped in war zones; in the UK, a woman is killed by a man every three days. We struggle for equal pay, adequate healthcare and basic human rights all around the world.
Where did the denigration of women all begin? Is Eve, mother of mankind, to blame? And does the Bible have any message of comfort for the women of today? Women in the bible are often sidelined, faceless and nameless, only mentioned when they are part of wrongdoing or extreme self-sacrifice. But who is narrating these stories? God or man?
In this exciting new book, Archbishop Fidelia Onyuku-Opukiri puts the lives of the women of the bible into sharp focus and examination and answers all these questions and more.
Archbishop Fidelia takes us on a journey through the bible, telling the stories of these women with candour, humour and imagination, painting vivid pictures of marital and family conflict, shame, despair and triumph. As she paints these pictures, the Archbishop gives a voice to the voiceless – both in biblical times and for the unseen suffering of the women of today. This book indeed helps us to understand that ‘there is nothing new under the sun’; there is nothing that we women go through today that the women of the Bible have not encountered.
This book makes the important distinction between the narrative of mankind (flawed, selfish and sinful) and the narrative of God about women. We are not cursed but blessed, we are not downtrodden but lifted up, we are not forsaken but remembered – our names are written in the Book of Life. And best of all, the redeeming power of Jesus’ blood is available for all women – whoever we are and wherever we are!
Through scripture, admonition, cautions and songs, we are encouraged and advised and even prayed for. What a blessing this book is!
As well as having a much needed encouraging and empowering message for all women, it also has a message of wisdom for men. Christian or non-Christian, if you’ve ever been through a trial, a heartache, or a discouragement, this book is for you. God sees you – he loves you. And remember – The Women Were There, Too (#TWWTT)!
